A Wine Expert Drinks for a Living. Her Advice on Drinking Less Might Surprise You...
Let's hear it for Libby Brodie. In a brilliant new piece for Women's Health, the wine consultant, writer and all-round drinks expert tackles a subject that the wine industry hasn't always been particularly comfortable discussing: how to enjoy alcohol without letting it take over.
And she does it without finger-wagging, guilt-tripping or suggesting we all retreat to a life of herbal tea and early nights. Thank God for that.
Libby makes no secret of the fact that she drinks wine for a living. It's her job, her passion and a huge part of her social life. But she's also refreshingly open about the importance of understanding how much we're drinking and making smarter choices along the way. It's an approach I of course support 100%.
One of Libby's eight recommendations particularly struck a chord: drink something you genuinely enjoy.
It sounds obvious, but for years, anyone choosing not to drink alcohol was expected to settle for something distinctly second-rate. A sickly sweet mocktail, a soft drink masquerading as something sophisticated. Or that perennial party favourite, a glass of sparkling water. Really?!
Libby rightly points to the extraordinary growth in quality alcohol-free options, and we're delighted she recommends Noughty for anyone who loves the ceremony of pouring that first chilled glass...
Ceremony matters.
