Thomson & Scott launched its £9.95 Noughty non-alcoholic sparkling chardonnay in 2019 and also offers red, white and rosé in Waitrose, Four Seasons hotels and elsewhere, she writes.

Its founder, Amanda Thomson, points out that alcoholic wine does not necessarily contain more premium ingredients.

"Ethanol is cheap to produce on its own so the inclusion of alcohol per se in wine is essentially no more expensive."
